Information - OS14 Turbulent mixing in aquatic ecosystems - physical processes and ecosystem responses (co-listed in BG)

Event Information
In all aquatic environments vertical turbulent mixing is pivotal in controlling phytoplankton access to light and nutrients. Mixing drives the vertical fluxes of nutrients, and moves phytoplankton cells through the sharp vertical gradient in light. Variations in the mixing, either vertically because of the presence of stratification, or through time due to meteorological events, the seasonal cycle, or climate change, forces phytoplankton cells to acclimatise or the phytoplankton community to adapt. Our focus in the session is on understanding the physics of, and the biochemical and ecological responses to, variations in turbulent mixing. Contributions can be either inter-disciplinary or focused on particular physical/biological aspects, model-, laboratory-, or field-based. Our aim is to generate some cross-disciplinary fertilisation, with a mix of physicists, biochemists and ecologists, with both modellers and observational researchers.
