Information - NH9.4 Natural hazard and risk protection strategies: Early Warning Systems and structural measures (co-listed in GI)

Event Information
Past conferences have few contributions in "Natural Hazard Protection Strategies". Considering the major impact of Climate Change on the frequency and intensity of catastrophes caused by floods, debris flow, landslides, rock fall and avalanches the adaption of these strategies is a primary task for the authorities as well as for the applied sciences.

Therefore it seems to be necessary to impart the information about the state of the art of natural hazard engineering as well as to present the improvements with new mitigation measures better against these hazards in order to be prepared for the environmental changes due to global warming. A focal point should be the combination of structural and non structural mitigation measures within integrated protection concepts. Beyond all doubt the session should attract scientists as well as practitioners. Especially in the field of landslides, flood, avalanche and debris flows mitigation a dynamic development has taken place in the Alpine countries in the near past enclosing scientific and engineering methods (strategies) in the sense of an integrated risk management. Within the session all kinds of active, passive, structural, non structural and organizational measures should be concerned. The emphasis lies on the lessons learned, the numerical and physical modelling and in the strategies for risk management concerning floods, debris flow, landslides, rock fall and avalanches. Studies that focus mainly on the impact of climate change on natural hazard protection are preferably welcomed.

A broad scope of contributions is expected as the results of important international projects concerning climate change influence on natural hazards, like ASTRA, ESPON, ClimChAlp, StartClim, EraNet Crue, IRASMOS will be available at the time of the conference.

This session should attract scientists as well as practitioners (natural hazard engineering).
