Information - SSP5/BG8 Microbial Carbonates (co-sponsored by IAS and co-organized by BG)
Event Information
The importance of microbes in the precipitation of modern and ancient carbonates has long been recognized, for example, via carbon-isotope signals, but recent studies of the actual microbial communities and their mineral products are providing new perspectives on the extent of this activity. The application of new high-resolution analytical and imaging technology, as well as microbiology techniques, to the study of carbonate mineral precipitation confirms the significance of microbial processes, particularly during carbonate diagenesis. This session seeks to bring together carbonate sedimentologists, geochemists and geomicrobiologists to present new developments in the study of microbial carbonates at the geosphere-biosphere interface.
