Reference Earth models are constantly used and leave a large imprint on many seismological activities ranging from earthquake location and source studies to structural inferences. The need for a specific, broadly accepted, seismological reference is particularly strong for Europe, where the uppermost mantle structure is very complex on a small lateral scale. There is, however, surprisingly little consensus of what a reference model is and should be able to provide. The very characteristics that define a 'good' reference model may be subject to debate, as they are related to specific applications. Making a seismic Earth model that is accepted by a large community, and is actually used in seismological practice, is therefore a long process, and involves a lot of people from a large group of disciplines. The aim of this session is to stimulate and continue this discussion within the broad European seismological community, and try and make an inventory of possible ingredients for a European reference Earth model. Any contributions from earthquake location, source studies and the analyses of body and surface waves in general, at various scales, which illustrate the importance, requirements, and uses of such a reference model are welcome. This session is sponsored by the SPICE Consortium, a Marie Curie Research Training Network and NERIES, an FP6 Integrated Infrastructure Initiative.
