Event Information
“Climate variability and change in Europe and its societal impact, in the past, present and in the future”

Climate and its variability, as manifest in changes in the daily to long term means and extremes,
is of all times and has an evident impact. In the pre-industrial period, variability of the climate was
determined by natural factors. Since then human activity is becoming a factor of increasing importance.
Climate change will increase in the near future and thus also its impacts.
Today this theme has a strong focus in the climatological community as was
evident in the conference “Living with Climate Variability and Change:
understanding the Uncertainties and Managing the Risks” (Espoo, Finland,
July 2006) and as it was addressed in the climatological counterpart of ECAM;
the “6th European Conference on Applied Climatology” (Ljubljana, Slovenia, September 2006).

This session addresses the assessment of climate change and variability in Europe,
including extremes and its impacts, from today’s next season to the end of the 21st century.

In particular we invite contributions dealing with:

a. Seasonal to inter-annual forecasting (predictability, downscaling, tailoring,..).

b. Approaches for development of regional climate scenarios (global vs. regional models, observations, downscaling, EPS,..).

c. Impacts and adaptation by societal sectors (energy, infrastructure planning, land-use, tourism, health,..).

d. Tailoring climate scenarios for use by societal sectors.
