  Information - IS3 - BG4.2/CL45 Data/model interactions: the biological perspective of understanding past global changes, from Tertiary to present (co-organized by BG & CL)

Interdivision CL-BG session dedicated to Prof. Dominique Jolly
Dominique Jolly was professor of botany at the University Montpellier II, when he passed away last July after a short illness that ended his too short scientific career. During his stay in Lund with Colin Prentice, Dominique Jolly contributed to the validation of both BIOME vegetation model and climatic models on both European and African vegetations, especially by developing the biomisation method, but also later when professor in Montpellier, by contributing to the new approach of inverse modeling. He also strongly contributed to gather both the data and modeling communities. During his too short career, Dominique Jolly was interested in various aspects of paleoecology related to past global changes. As an enthusiastic researcher he transmitted his passion for investigating all aspects of paleoenvironmental changes to the many students he advised or taught.
Ecologist by formation, Dominique Jolly was interested by a broad diversity of scientific topics: Tropical paleoecology and paleoclimatology, in Quaternary deposits in Africa to Tertiary lignites in Thailand, long distance transport of pollen to Greenland to the environmental changes during the Australopithecine Lucy life as well as various aspects of paleoecology and paleoclimatology. He made the necessarily link between the community of "data producers� and the modeler community developing vegetation and General Circulation models. Always convinced that the answer of understanding mechanism lies in the fruitful dialog between the two different approaches. His will of communicating new ideas and his legendary friendship had given him a unique position in the concerned community of Data/ Model comparison.

We aim at organizing the special session "Data/model interactions: the biological perspective of understanding past global changes, from Tertiary to present " to attract presentations on the biospheric responses to global changes at any time scale, focusing, but not only, on Tropical Paleoecology in Africa, Asia, model-data comparisons, from scientists interested by the different topics that Dominique investigated but also from friends and collaborators of Dominique.
