Information - GI4 Planetary Landers, Instrumentation and Robotics (co-listed in PS)

Event Information
This session is focused on technologies and instrumentation of planetary landing vehicles. This includes e.g. sensors and instruments, power systems, telecomms, command and data management systems as well as entry, descent and landing systems.

Various ongoing planetary landing missions are currently being developed and planned. Emphasis will be put on papers discussing the specific issues in existing systems in operation and systems in an advanced stage of development, but there will be room also for papers on future instruments and enabling technologies were they have direct applications in their respective areas. In addition, generic talks discussing design principles, miniaturisation, component selection and calibration are most welcome.

This session also addresses robotic mobile systems for use on the Earth and on other planetary objects in the solar system. Whereas numerous interesting technical aspects of these systems abound, the focus of the session is on the science that can be addressed with them and what constraints they impose on scientific investigations, assuming presently available technology. Papers and posters are solicited which present examples of scientific applications of remotely operated surface, submersible and airborne systems on Earth and on other planetary bodies. This includes contributions related to instrumentation suitable for such vehicles. Particularly sought are presentations that cover ‘lessons learned’ from field use of actually evaluated vehicles, including terrestrial field tests of planetary rover prototypes and experiences from the current Mars Exploration Rover missions.
