Information - IS37 - NP1.02/ES5 The butterfly effect and other monsters of nonlinear geosciences: what is to be learnt? (co-organized by NP & ES)

Event Information
Geosciences has been a source of powerful paradigms, e.g. the ‘fractal geometry of Nature’, the ‘butterfly effect’, ‘self-organised criticality’ and the ‘cascade processes’, leading to non classical approaches in geophysical research at the theoretical level as well as for applications, including for instance long-term resource management. This raises two questions, which are unfortunately rarely debated: what should be taught and learnt from these methodological changes? What are the synergies to be developed?
In this session, these two questions will be first addressed with respect to the education at different levels, as well as to the communication with the press, the general public and government officials, who have still a general tendency to believe that there is no fundamental problem in geosciences. Case studies are particular welcome, e.g. successes/failures with innovative educational programmes or with the press.
