Information - GMPV22 Dynamics of pre-eruptive and eruptive processes (including Robert Wilhelm Bunsen Medal Lecture)
Event Information
Surface manifestations of volcanic eruptions (Plinian columns, pyroclastic flows, lava flows or domes) are directly linked to the internal evolution of magma rising from deep feeding system through magma chamber(s) volcanic conduits or fissures. The process is known to be highly non-linear so that slight changes in magmatic properties can deeply affect the eruptive behaviour. The resulting eruption styles and dynamics, and the size of the eruption, reflect the complex interplay between physical and chemical processes and properties. This session invites experimental, theoretical and numerical contributions highlighting in a quantitative and qualitative way such complex relationships. Contributions devoted to new modelling and parameterizations of single phase and multiphase magma properties and/or phase changes are also welcome.
