Hazards in coastal areas are related to extreme flooding events, storm surges, rapid sediment transfer processes by high-magnitude fluvial floods, landslides, and are also influenced by long term processes, sea level changes, subsidence, fluvial input by large rivers, and climate change.
The quantitative estimate of the risks in coastal areas that are exposed/vulnerable to flooding events is a hot topic nowadays On one hand , there is the need of modeling and operationally predict in the short term range the factors (such as storm surge, astronomical tide, wave set-up and run-up) causing them, on the other hand , of assessing trends and future distributions in the XXI century, including sea level rise and likely changes in the storm regimes. This is particularly important for extreme sea levels, because of the hazard they pose to population along the coast and the potential damage to structures and the environment.
This session recognizes that coast has attributes belonging to both terrestrial and marine environments. Therefore, geo-hazard assessment in these areas should include both on-land and marine investigations.
