Information - ST11 Sources and sinks of energy in the substorm cycle
Event Information
- the substorm releases enormous energy in several forms - plasmoid down the tail, populating the ring current, particle energy and Joule heating into the ionosphere/thermosphere. What controls the absolute energy release and the partitioning of energy between these processes? Although we also know roughly when the next substorm will go off, knowing the IMF conditions, we really don't know at what MLT the substorm occurs and its longitude extent and hence hwo the energy is lost from the magnetosphere. In multiple substorms, why do they stop and start i.e. you see a westward travelling surge, it stops, and then it starts again.
