Information - HS45 Modelling and observation of hydrological and biological processes in West Africa (co-listed in BG)
Event Information
West Africa has faced distinctive interannual variations of precipitation and water availability in the last decades. Extremely dry years have caused tremendous water and food shortages. Improved understanding of hydrological and biological processes in West Africa is a prerequisite for developing strategies that lead to sustainable livelihood in this climate sensitive region. This session aims at presentations of concepts and approaches for observing, modelling and understanding 1) surface and subsurface hydrological processes, 2) the interplay between water availability and vegetation dynamics, 3) feedbacks between land surface conditions and precipitation, 4) biogeochemical carbon and nitrogen cycling, and 5) coupled biogeochemical-hydrological modelling. The session particularly addresses the topics remote sensing and ground truthing of precipitation, soil moisture, and evapotranspiration, as well as of land surface- and vegetation properties in an environment where ground data are scarce.
