  Information - HS39 Stochastic-dynamic modelling of precipitation (co-listed in NP & AS)

Event Information
The enormous complexity of the task of trying to model precipitation from prime physical principles in a 3D atmospheric context has triggered various alternative modelling approaches. Complementing the observed dynamic regularities with stochastic information offers a wide enough framework to include essentially all time series-based modelling attempts, and yet it is precise enough to be based on the solid mathematical grounds of Dynamical Systems, Probability Theory and Statistics. This session will be primarily concerned with recent theoretical and empirical developments in precipitation modelling, topics including (but not being limited to):

- purely stochastic models vs. intrinsic dynamics;
- data requirements for explanatory variables;
- component analysis and other methods to select explanatory and intrinsic model variables;
- event models vs. climatic models.
