Information - HS36 Hydrogeology of fissured and karstic aquifers (co-listed in SSP)
Fissured and karstic rocks host some of the most prolific aquifers. About one quarter of the world’s population is largely or entirely dependent on karst groundwater. Unfortunately, these important water resources are highly vulnerable to contamination due to the rapid transport of pollutants in solution conduits. Effective strategies for the management and protection of water resources in karst areas, therefore, must be based on a sound understanding of flow, transport, and reaction processes in these aquifers as well as on reliable methods for hydrogeological characterisation and prediction.
This session seeks contributions related to all aspects of the hydrogeology of fissured and karstic aquifers including karst development, conceptual models of fissured and karstic aquifers, characterisation and modelling techniques, vulnerability assessment, and water management. We particularly welcome papers that provide links between innovative conceptual or numerical models and field data
