Understanding the complex interactions between various components of the Earth System that might cause rapid climate change requires multi-disciplinary expertise. The aim of this session is to present the current state of the art on rapid climate change, including studies of the whole Earth System and individual components such as the oceans, cryosphere, atmosphere and paleorecords of past changes. This session is twinned with a town hall meeting, which will be used to explore the interest in, and possibilities to, fund an international collaborative programme of research in this important and highly inter-disciplinary topic. An example of a successful ongoing international programme with a focus on rapid climate change is Joint RAPID, which was launched in 2003 by the research councils of the United Kingdom, Norway and The Netherlands. Joint RAPID includes projects based on cross-disciplinary approaches, including contributions from atmospheric and marine scientists, geochemists, glaciologists, geologists and climate modellers.
We encourage anyone with an interest in the topic to contribute to the session and the town hall discussion.
