New measurement technologies help us to improve the observation of processes that control water quality and quantity. For instance, considerable advances have been made in sensor technology (e.g., biosensors), spatial and temporal resolution of measurements (e.g., wireless sensor networks) and measurement scale (e.g., microdevices). These new measurements also pose new challenges in data assimilation, interpretation, and analysis used to increase process understanding and to test environmental models more incisively. This session will showcase new technologies and their application to hydrology for both water quantity and quality. Contributions could include: new sensors technologies, new methods for acquiring and processing high-resolution spatial or temporal data, methods for characterizing environmental materials and processes at new scales, new visualization techniques for data and simulations, and methods to incorporate new data in models to improve their representativity and predictive capacity (e.g., real time adaptive monitoring systems). Applications based on these emerging measurement technologies are also welcomed.
