The structure of a fluid flow and of the fields of contaminants,
chemicals, temperature, moisture and other scalars or particles that
it may carry can have a determining effect on various physical
properties such as mixing, dissipation, flux and transfer of various
quantities. The session will address the theory, observations and
measurements in geophysical and environmental flows and
turbulence: these include fractal and multifractal measures, wavelet
analysis, structure functions, Lyapunov exponents and multi-particle
statistics. The relations of these measurements to the kinematics and
dynamics of mixing, flux and transfer will be discussed involving
geometrical observations and physical relations used to develop
predictive schemes in geophysical and environmental flows involving
turbulence.

This Session will be devoted to mixing and transport of tracers
(passive, chemically or biologically active, or dynamically active) in
geophysical flows (in atmosphere, ocean, or Earth's interior). The aim
is to bring together contributions from theoreticians and
experimentalists involved in geophysical model development and data
analysis, as well as from researchers in dynamical systems theory,
stochastic modelling, and related fields, to stimulate
cross-fertilization. It is hoped that the session will cover topics
including the role of coherent structures as barriers or as avenues for
transport in the oceans and the atmosphere, the relationship of
turbulent transport and mixing to Lagrangian chaos models, the impact
of mixing by the flow on processes such as chemical reactions , and the
relation between Lagrangian and Eulerian structures.
