  Information - OS9/OS11 Open session on IMBER/SOLAS and sensitivity of marine ecosystems to climate change (co-listed in BG, CL & SSP)

Event Information
Attempts to predict the future global environment depend on a comprehensive understanding of how plankton biodiversity and biogeochemical cycling in the oceans affect the climate system, and of how changes in climate influence the structure and functional properties of oceanic ecosystems. With the realization that anthropogenic CO2 is the main contributor to climate change, scientific focus is directed towards understanding its long term influence (e.g. decreasing pH) on marine systems.

Intensive ecological and biogeochemical field studies have been undertaken during the last two decades including lagrangian process studies, eulerian time-series stations, meridional transects and purposeful nutrient and CO2 fertilizations. These field studies have been interpreted with the aid of a hierarchy of mathematical models which describe the contextual physical processes supplying the requisite ecosystem structure and biogeochemical cycles. Satellite ocean color data provide a basis for observing basin-scale variability in biological activities. This session invites contributions related to observations, experimental manipulations, predictive analyses and modelling studies of the biological, chemical, physical and geological processes involved in the marine biogeochemical cycles, ecosystems and their interactions, with special focus on their response to climate change.
