Empirical dynamical models derived from data by an inverse modelling approach are complementary to models derived directly from physical principles. They are often useful for system diagnosis, understanding, prediction and modelling.
This session is devoted to all aspects of empirical models, both their estimation from data and properties of the models themselves. The models may be linear or nonlinear, deterministic and/or stochastic. Topics include but are not limited to linear Markov models, Markov chains, hidden Markov models, mixture models, reduced-order modelling and regression models of all kind. Applications may come from atmospheric and oceanic sciences, climatology, palaeoclimatology, hydrology and ecology.
