Information - MPRG05 Paleomagnetism, Climate and Environmental magnetism (co-listed in CL and SSP)
Event Information
This session concerns both fundamental implications and methological applications of the paleomagnetic and rock-magnetic disciplines.
1) Earth (paleo-)magnetism and (paleo-)climatology interactions must be (and historically was) considered with extreme care and caution. Recent advances in paleomagnetism and coupling with cosmogenic nuclides studies, demonstrate that the reliability, accuracy and resolution now start reaching the appropriate status to enable analysing the relationships between geomagnetic variations and climatic variations at the 103 to 106 year scale. Did the paleoclimate and orbital parameters act on the power of the geodynamo ? Did the paleo-field act on the paleoclimate through modulation of the galactic cosmic rays ? At different time scales and amplitudes, both questions are seriously raised and must be treated on an observational (paleo-proxy) and theoretical points of views.
2) Rock-magnetism offers high sensitivity and high-resolution tools to decipher lithological and bio-geochemical changes in sediments, soils and surficial materials, linked with climate and environment variabilities. From single parameter high resolution characterization to multi-proxy networks of iron bearing mineral mixtures, the rock-magnetic method interacts with rock physics, geochemistry and biology to improve the identification and quantification of paleoclimate and environmental contrasts at the local, regional or global scales.
