Event Information
Session AW 03.1: Severe Weather and Atmospheric Hazards - Verification

The subsession within session AW03 is intended to focus on the verification of severe weather events and atmospheric hazards. Such events are typically characterized by their extreme intensity and rarity. This addresses special requirements on the selection of suitable and meaningful verification methods and measures. Small sample sizes and the events occuring at the extreme ends of the climatological distributions would a.o. call for statistical significance testing of the verification results. For severe weather events neither forecasting nor verification of the exact position or the intensity of the event is a trivial task. Therefore, verification studies and results based on object-oriented, entity-based, or fuzzy logic techniques are especially welcome. Papers can deal with the performance of NWP output - probabilistic or deterministic - as well as with final forecasts delivered to end users, and even cover studies accounting for the end user's decision-making dilemma in severe weather situations. In addition to meteorological verification studies, the verification of extreme hydrological events, like the recent notorious European floods, fits the scope of this session. Contributions that are related to the verification of any of the phenomena listed under the severe weather session (AW03) Event Information are particularly invited.
