Information - NP2.03 Nonlinear low-frequency variability in atmosphere, ocean and the climate system (co-listed in CL & OS)
A main aim of this session is to use dynamical systems concepts for understanding mechanisms and processes responsible for nonlinear low-frequency variability (NLFV) on seasonal to decadal time scales in the atmosphere, ocean and the climate system.
In the framework of these concepts, NLFV can arise due to irregular transitions between distinct atmospheric and oceanic regimes and due to interaction between low- and high-frequency modes.
Important questions are:
What part of NLFV is due to the large-scale nonlinear dynamics and what parts is due to feedbacks from unresolved scales?
How important are nonlinear instability processes, interactions betwen orographically forced and baroclinic waves and the interaction between internal modes of variability and external forcing factors?
Modelling studies are encouraged to span the range of model hierarchy from idealised models to coupled AOGCMs.
