Information - NH2.04 Risk assessments of complex flood situations (co-listed in HS)
Event Information
Economic flood damage has increased during the last decades, particularly in urban areas. Comprehensive risk assessments are essential to integrated, efficient flood management. However, investigations concentrate mainly on scenarios of slowly rising river flooding. Rarer, but still damaging mechanisms such as ice-induced flooding or the combined impact of different flood types (e.g. a high groundwater level in the aftermath of a river flooding) are not generally taken into consideration. The common methods of damage assessments are focused on the water level as the primary factor determining damage, although e.g. during flash floods the velocity might be much more important. This session aims at the improvement of flood risk assessments due to a broader spectrum of flood scenarios and specific damage models considering more influencing factors besides the water level.
Aspects to be covered by the session include but are not limited to:
• Modelling of different flood types such as flash floods, ice induced floods etc.
• Estimation of inundation areas due to a combination of flood types
• Damage analyses and estimation of specific flood types
• Decision support tools to reduce flood risks due to complex flood situations
Contributions addressing the development of conceptual models or case studies are equally welcome.
