Report - AS2.02 Air-Sea Interactions (General Session) (co-listed in OS)

Report
The session has established a regular interest from the scientific community, and attracted this year about 80 people to the Oral Programme. More people attended the first part of the session devoted to the theoretical development. The session was presented by 12 oral (one no show) and 18 poster (one cancellation and 2 no show ) papers. This is 40% more than last year, and so that the session has gained more interest. The overall ratio of oral to posters was 40% and 60% was good. The session considered all aspects of air-sea interaction: physics of fluxes (momentum, energy, heat, spray, moisture and gases) and processes (wind, waves, currents, slicks, rain, etc.) responsible for these fluxes at the air-sea interface, above and below; determination of fluxes from surface, aircraft and satellite; modelling studies at all scales. The emphasis this year was given to papers presenting experimental and theoretical effort to understand the air-sea interactions at extreme weather conditions. This theme was represented by 4 theoretical and 1 experimental talks. Several talks were devoted to new measuring techniques. The poster session was mainly concerned with experimental studies performed both in the laboratory and the field, and for different scales: micro-, meso- and global. Modelling effort at different scales was also covered by the session. The overall impression is that in 2008 the session was more successful than in 2007 attracting more talks and more participants, and covering broader aspects of air-sea interactions.
