Information - B0.4 Small Bodies Exploration

Event Information |

Numerous fascinating space missions to small bodies are now underway, in their cruise phase or in preparation, e.g. Dawn, Hayabusa, Deep Impact, Rosetta, Stardust… Sample return missions are now being undertaken; while they are subject to the constraints imposed by planetary protection and require a better understanding of safe atmospheric re-entry of atmospheric capsules, they provide unique opportunities to obtain in-situ data of unambiguous parent bodies of meteoritic materials.
For all these missions, emphasis needs to be given to the importance of international cooperation, to the need of support through observations and theoretical and laboratory work, and to the significance of some results in terms of exogenous sources for the origin of life.
A team involved in space missions, as well as in cometary, asteroidal and meteoritic sciences, will jointly organize this main event. It is anticipated that six major themes (that you are invited to mention in your proposed abstract) will be addressed:
1. Results on on-going missions
2. New missions in preparation
3. Remote observations in support of missions
4. Theoretical work in support of missions
5. Laboratory simulations in support of missions
6. Planetary protection issues related to sample return missions
