Over the last decade semi-enclosed seas and their coastal zones have been faced with a notable increase in population and often uncoordinated processes of development. Such processes result in coastal pollution, irrational use of resources and deterioration of living conditions. This session provides an open forum for discussions of the prcessess that govern the environmental state of the bodies of water where the exchanges with the large oceans are restricted and the system is nearly self-contained. The areas of interest range from large semi-enclosed seas and gulfs, to fjords to bar-blocked estuaries and straits. The session invites contribution to help understanding similar processes occiring in different geographical settings, such as the Baltic, Black, Mediterranean and its regional seas, Japan Seas, Gulf of Mexico etc. This session will move away from a mere descriptive presentations, instead we encourage discussions of pump-priming projects and innovative ideas related to assessment and prediction of integrated marine systems. Contributions are invited on theoretical, modelling and observational aspects of environmental changes ( which include thermohaline structures, optical properties, chlorophyll concentration) caused by currents, eddies, tides, internal waves, turbulence, river discharges, meteorological forcing (including climate change), nutrient and carbon cycling and anthropogenic activities. While any presentations on either single- or inter-disciplinary research are equally welcome, this year we particularly encourage submissions on the Southern European Seas and the findings that provide a better understanding of the role of physics in bio-geo-chemical changes. Water quality, sea-level rise and the risks of flooding are also considered.
