Information - GM9 Submarine erosion (co-listed in SSP, NH & OS)
Event Information
A significant effort of marine geology and geophysics has been directed to addressing the origins and processes involved in slope failure and sedimentary flows in sculpting submarine topography. As a result, the continental and other slopes in many areas have been well characterized with sonar, seismic and coring datasets. These data and our improved understanding of process now prompt the question of whether a more holistic understanding of submarine erosion can emerge, as in subaerial geomorphology where knowledge of stream bed and other erosion process is used to explain the wider form of the landscape and its controls. This session seeks contributions that address aspects of submarine erosion by turbidity currents, debris flows, slides and oceanographic currents from observations and modelling. The scope of the session will be broad and encompass both erosion within channels and open-slope erosion by oceanographic currents.
