Information - CL002 Monsoon climates - variability, changes and paleo-perspectives

Event Information
The monsoons represent the dominant mode of climate variability in the low latitudes. The Asian monsoon systems alone affect life conditions of almost 40 % of the Earth's population. Understanding and predicting the mechanisms of monsoon variations at different time scales from extended-range weather forecasting to long-term climate changes is an important challenge in the light of increasing population density, water demand and food security. Moreover monsoonal climate plays and played an important role in moderating Earth climate.
This session is dedicated to all kinds of disciplinary and interdisciplinary research, dealing with the understanding of present monsoon climate and its evolution on geological time scales. Large amplitude monsoonal climate variations have been documented on Milankovitch to multi-decadal time scales from both terrestrial and marine settings. Although a major component of the Earth climate system, fundamental relations/teleconnections on a regional (e.g. ENSO) to global scale (e.g. Dansgaard-Oeschger cycles) are not yet fully understood. Archives of past monsoonal change not only record local climate but, more importantly, constitute a unique potential for a better understanding of processes controlling Earth climate.
We seek papers focusing on process understanding, rather than presentations with a more technical character. Three main issues are particularly welcome: (1) the temporal evolution and typical time scales of monsoon fluctuations in the past, present and future (2) the improvement of our physical understanding of the key factors and mechanisms of monsoon variability at different time scales, (3) the prospects for monsoon prediction at time scales from weeks to decades, based on numerical and statistical approaches.
