This session, jointly organized by the Divisions Stratigraphy, Sedimentology and Palaeontology and Climate: Past, Present and Future, will be devoted to chemical and physical sediments deposited in caves.
Processes leading to the deposition, precipitation and preservation of these sediments in the subsurface are still incompletely understood.
Although the main emphasis of this session will be on secondary mineral deposits formed in karst cavities (speleothems), we also invite contributions dealing with biogenically-mediated and clastic sedimentation, both modern and ancient. The rationale is that cave sediments, if carefully studied, provide invaluable records of past hydrological, climatic and environmental changes on multi-millennial time scales. Topics of particular interest for this session include multi-annual monitoring studies of modern cave environments in different climatic settings (including the tropics), refinements of geochemical proxy-climate transfer functions, reproducibility tests of chronologically well constrained speleothem records, studies exploring
the limits of ultra-high resolution in annually banded stalagmites, and studies exploring the influence of microbial activity on cave deposits.
The session will be of interest to terrestrial geologists, sedimentologists, speleologists, biochemists, archaeologists and palaeoclimatologists wishing to acquire state of the art data and interpretations on a fascinating subject of increasing importance.
