  Information - HS12 Subsurface assessment and characterisation: physical, chemical, and isotopic tools (co-listed in SSS, co-sponsored by IAEA)

Event Information
Subsurface assessment tools generically are techniques applied specifically for the characterisation of key or critical properties in unsaturated and/or saturated zones of the subsurface both for resource assessment (eg. aquifer structures, yield, fluid flow paths and residence times, connectivity, recharge/discharge, sustainability) and quality assessments (e.g. physical, chemical, and biological properties, vulnerability, remediation, and again resource sustainability). This session encourages presentations of recent developments and state-of-the-art techniques particularly for aquifer assessment and subsurface hydrology, which may cover measuring and monitoring techniques (e.g. hydraulic testing, applied tracers, indicator techniques, in-situ microcosms, and joint methods etc.) through modelling strategies and scaling approaches, especially driven by considerations of or concern for vulnerability and risk, remediation, and/or sustainability issues. We are particularly interested in exploring the potential role of isotope signatures of analogue compounds used either as applied tracers (eg in-situ reactive tests) or as natural "fingerprint" tracers for source/provenance and process identification/quantification in aquifers over various scales. We encourage also contributions from both scientists and water resource managers describing case studies that show how assessment tools have contributed to enhancing subsurface system characterisation and modelling, risk assessment, and sustainability criteria.
