Information - MPRG2 Magnetic field variations: from jerks to reversals (tribute to J.L. LeMouel)

Event Information
The session aims at discussing recent advances of our knowledge on the present state and on the history of the geodynamo obtained from analyses of geomagnetic data or from the development of computer and laboratory models. We welcome all contributions that open new ways to make inferences on the core dynamics.

Comparison of flows within the liquid core with other geophysical and planetary flows may turn out to be very useful. As an example, improved combination of observatory and satellite data may help us to make inferences on rapid temporal changes of the zonal motions, which are ubiquitous in all rapidly rotating bodies.

The relevance of present day numerical geodynamo models is much discussed. Possible shortcomings stem from simplifying (but often necessary) assumptions such as using small kinetic Reynolds numbers, treating the fluid alloy within the core as a Boussinesq fluid, omitting lateral variations in the boundary conditions, or adopting quasi-geostrophic two-dimensional momentum equations. The discussion of these issues will help us to outline future modelling efforts.

Many models of the thermal and energetic history of the core have recently appeared. That prompts us to wonder to what extent paleomagnetic data may eventually allow to date the onset of the geodynamo and/or the formation of the solid inner core.

Finally, this session has been organized as a tribute to Jean-Louis Mouël. In this respect, we reckon that the presentation of simple physical models opening new perspectives to the analysis of geomagnetic data would be particularly appropriate.
