  Information - SSS1 Soils and weathered rocks from microscopic to atomic scale. Towards a chronology of weathering processes (co-listed in BG, CL, CR, GMPV & GM) (including Philippe Duchaufour Medal Lecture)

Event Information
Soils and saprolites, which result from the action of weathering processes, registered time and space variations of environmental changes but may also display components inherited from other processes as human activity, hydrothermalism and eolian sedimentation. The heterogeneity of such alteration mantles, which results from the complex interplay between self-organizing chemical-transport reactions and varying boundary conditions, make it difficult to interpret the soil record. Micromorphology is a powerful tool to discriminate the different processes through the identification of the parageneses by in situ approach. Unlocking the mineralogical record in soils, paleosoils and saprolites thus requires an integrated approach based on micro- and nano-morphological observations, combined with spatially resolved chemical, isotopic and mineralogical analyses, as well as on detailed investigations performed after chemically or physically selective treatments. The purpose of this session is to promote such a multi-disciplinary approach with a special emphasis on studies providing relative or absolute time constraints about soil formation and weathering processes.
