  Information - NH3.07 Mechanics of Mass Flows (co-listed in GM)

Event Information
Prediction of the areas threatened by gravity-driven mass flows is a key part of hazard assessment in mountainous regions. Whatever the material transported (debris, snow, etc.), the mass flow problem is quite complex since it involves determining the initiation mechanisms, initial volume, physical transport and entrainment processes, and deposition mechanisms. Because of the number of scientific disciplines needed to solve it, there is a substantial benefit from interdisciplinary research. This session aims to bring together new research results from a variety of different approaches to understanding mass movement processes. In particular, we encourage presentations on mathematical modelling, innovative laboratory research, and detailed field observations, which yield insight into the mass movement or mass flow process. Presentations are encouraged from any one or combination of these topics. Innovative contributions related to granular geophysical flows, including debris flows, rock avalanches, and snow avalanches, and similar flows are expected.
