Information - US4 EUROMARGINS dynamic processes - keynote lecture session (co-organized by SSP & TS) (co-listed in BG)

Event Information
European margins are the product of complex interactions between processes in the Earth’s astenosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere: interactions that evolve in space and time. Our present understanding of some of the relevant processes, e.g., from rifting and break-up in the northern North Atlantic, or subduction in the Mediterranean Seas, to internal and external controlling factors including fluid flow, biogeochemical and sediment transport processes will provide insights into both the geosphere-biosphere coupling and the dynamics of ocean margins systems. This session presents an overview of the EUROMARGINS programme, which has been financed by national funding agencies from 10 European countries (FWO, Belgium; CNRS, France; DFG, Germany; CNR, Italy; NWO, the Netherlands; NFR, Norway; FCT, Portugal; CSIC and MCYT, Spain; VR, Sweden; NERC, the United Kingdom) and the European Science Foundation (ESF) under the EUROCORES Programmes, with support by the European Commission, DG Research (Sixth Framework Programme, contract ERAS-CT-2003-980409).

The topics of the presentations will be:

- Dynamics of conjugate volcanic margins (Faleide, Norway)
- Geodynamics of deep basins (Fernandez, Spain)
- Cold-seep ecosystems and microbial habitats (Boetius, Germany)
- Fluid flow systems (Foucher, France)
- Geobiology of European margins (Dullo, Germany)
- Carbonate - and Mud - mound forcing (van Weering, The Netherlands)
- Slope instability and their consequences (Mienert, Norway)
[- Sedimentary systems and climate (Schneider, France)]
