  Information - A2.1 Biological and Physical Oceanographic Processes from Satellite Data

Event Information
Over the last 25 years, physical and bio-geochemical oceanography has passed a major turning point thanks to the advent of new measurement techniques on-board satellites. The global and accurate view of the ocean offered from space has permitted a better understanding of a variety of involved mechanisms and their roles in the earth environment.
Another turning point is being reached with the development of operational uses of satellite remote sensing data for the benefit of the global monitoring of the environment. Merging of remote sensing data from various sources together with information from in situ data and models constitutes the integrated approach of ocean monitoring and forecasting that is presently under international development, for both dynamical and biological aspects, at open ocean and coastal scales.
Topics of particular interest are:

a) The development of new space-based techniques to monitor surface and subsurface parameters of the ocean;
b) The determination of mass, heat transport and fluxes over the ocean and their interaction with atmosphere;
c) The joint use of satellite and in situ data with models to provide analysis and forecasts of the ocean in 3D;
d) The preparation of future global ocean observations systems for monitoring the ocean;
e) The carbon cycle in the ocean, the biological processes, and their impact on climate, biogeochemical cycles and productivity.

The above topics are the drivers of the symposium, and use of satellite data is of course considered as the focal point within the discussion of these topics.
Four sessions are organized within the A2.1 COSPAR event:

1. "Calibration and validation; Geophysical parameter retrieval algorithms"
2. "Ocean circulation and dynamic processes"
3. "Marine biogeochemistry from space"
4. "Remote sensing data bases; applications"
