Information - ES4 Natural Risks Assessment (NaRAs) Workshop for Teachers
Event Information
Mediterranean countries are subject to frequent and different natural catastrophes which pay a high toll in terms of economic loss and human life. Since some tens of years EU countries are trying to mitigate the effects of these events mainly by means of prevention. Scientific progress in natural risk assessment and mitigation has increased the capacity of teachers to organize the education about this subject in the school.
The aim of NaRAs (Natural Risk Assessement) project is to contribute to harmonise the risk assessment procedures and indicate ways to quantitative evaluation of hazard and risk levels through a two years long programmed series of Workshops, seminars, meetings, formation and educational activities which involve scientists, administrators, insurance experts and teachers who have been actively working in risk assessment problems in the latest years.
This special session at the EGU meeting in April 2005 is intended to offer secondary school teachers in Physics, Geography and Earthsciences an opportunity to upgrade their knowledge in modern geophysics around the natural hazards, through lectures and discussions with leading scientists in the field.
It also constitutes an excellent opportunity to meet and exchange experiences of teaching with colleagues from different European countries, mainly about how to approach the aspects of mitigation, assessement of natural risks in the school.
