  Information - SSS1 Mineralogical and geochemical records of weathering and pedoplasmation: from spatial to temporal scales (co-listed in GMPV)

Event Information
During the "Symposium on the Age of Parent Material and Soils", in 1970, Walter Kubiena, sentenced: "... there exist no other method capable of revealing the nature and complexity of soil polygenesis in so much detail as thin- section micromorphology and in the same time enabling one to follow and explain its formation ...".
Over thirty years later, micromorphology is an indispensable tool to study weathering, pedoplasmation and other processes from which result the heterogeneity of alteration mantles. And so allows the reconstruction of temporal relationship from the spatial assemblage of constituents.
Nowadays, very powerful tools in mineralogy and geochemistry are accessible to scientists, enlarging the scales of observation toward micro and nano-particles. Mineralogy, cristallo-chemistry as well as micro-geochemistry or isotopic analyses when related to thin sections observations or in-situ analyses are much more efficient to understand the complexity of alteration processes.

The purpose of this session is to promote multi-scale researches on alteration and pedoplasmation. We solicited contributions from soil scientists, mineralogists and geochemists focused on the signature of alteration (relative to absolute chronology, complex polygenesis, paleoenvironmental records) from authigenic minerals to chemical anomalies, from field-scale to nano-scale.
