Information - NH5.02 Mass movements in volcanic terrains and hazard implications

Event Information
Instability processes are rather common on volcano flanks and can generate many different types of mass movements. These processes represent an important hazard to people and infrastructure located in volcanic areas and may cause a significant economic lost. Two of the most destructive instability processes are debris avalanches and lahars, both of them characterised by a mostly instantaneous failure and a high mobility. Other types of volcano instability occur over a long period of time and produce continuous deformations in the volcanic edifice.
