Information - NH5.01 Progress in understanding magmatic processes and timescales at European volcanoes: implications for hazard assessment
Event Information
The characteristics of volcanic eruptions are largely predetermined by conditions and timescales of magma storage and differentiation prior to eruptions. This session aims to promote the integration of the geochemical and physical record of magma differentiation preserved in the rocks as a main tool for volcanic risk assessment. We encourage contributions working on all aspects of magma behaviour at European volcanoes. We expect these to include geochemical and petrographic approaches to defining source regions and differentiation processes and methodologies for determining the timescales over which processes such as crystallisation and assimilation occur. Research using geophysical approaches to constraining the structures of magma systems, or volcanological methods for linking eruption characteristics to magma evolution are also welcome. Comparisons of behaviour and magma/eruption characteristics among European volcanoes would provide additional interest.
