Information - AS3.08 Trace Gas Composition and Chemistry of the Last Two Hundred Years from Firn and Ice Core Measurements (co-listed in CR)

Event Information
Firn (deep unconsolidated snow) contains a record of atmospheric gas-phase composition dating back several decades. More recently this time horizon has been extended to older dates by extracting gases from shallow ice cores. There are now continuous firn-ice records of detailed atmospheric composition spanning the last approximately 200 years. This Special Session marks the end of the EU CRYOSTAT project which investigated firn and ice cores from both Antarctica and Greenland. Investigators from all firn and ice core projects are, however, cordially invited to participate. A Special Issue of Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics will arise from this session to bring together the accumulated wisdom of the past decade of international research in this area. Presentations dealing with both the firn and ice records themselves; laboratory, field and modelling studies of air-snow exchange; and global modelling of atmospheric distributions and trends based on glacial records, will all be welcome. The gases of interest include the carbon cycle gases, nitrous oxide, halocarbons, non-methane hydrocarbons, permanent gases (as tracers of within-firn processes) as well as adsorbed gaseous species such as hydrogen peroxide and formaldehyde. Isotope ratio measurements are now being made on a number of these gases, and these are proving to be powerful tools for probing the sources and atmospheric chemistry of several such gases.
