Information - CL3 Mediterranean Climate Variability (co-listed in OS)

Event Information
This session focuses on the Mediterranean climate at different time scales and its connections with the global climate. Presentations on climate variability, trends and climate change at regional scale are solicited. Particularly welcome are presentations analysing the coupled atmosphere-ocean system and the interactions between atmospheric and oceanic variability. Themes included in this session are: the reconstruction of the past Mediterranean Climate based on instrumental data, natural and documentary proxies; model simulations focused on the Mediterranean region; connections between the climate variability in the Mediterranean region and the Tropics (ENSO, Monsoons...), the Mid Latitudes (NAO... )and other global patterns; analysis of the connections between sea level pressure, precipitation and temperature in the Mediterranean and the climate of other regions (e.g. Sahel); the role of the Mediterranean sea as source of moisture and heat reservoir for the coastal regions around it; the role of the outflow of the Mediterranean Levantine Intermediate Water on the Meridional Overturnig Circulation of the North Atlantic; the role of air-sea interaction at regional scale and the structure and relative intensity of the circulation cells of the Mediterranean Sea; identification of trends of sea level, temperature and salinity; impacts of climate variability and trends in the Mediterranean region.

Preliminary List of Solicited Speakers
V.Artale: Some advances to understand what Mediterranean Sea circulation processes are relevant for climate variability
R.Trigo : Extreme events in the Western Mediterranean region and their link to climate patterns
E. Xoplaki, J.F. Gonzalez-Rouco and J. Luterbacher: Mediterranean temperature and precipitation variability, large scale dynamics and trends.
