Information - AS1.06 GIS in meteorology and climatology (co-listed in CL)

Event Information

The aim of the session is to bring together experts and other interested people working in meteorology and climatology, as well as those working with Geographic Information Systems with the goal to improve our understanding of the value and necessity of spatial data and analysis in the domain of meteorology and climatology.
The session is planned to address:
- GIS methods/technology applications in climatology and meteorology progress, limitations and future developments.
- Techniques of information extraction and adaptation for the use in GIS in meteorology and climatology (e.g., data infrastructure development). This will include contributions on improved measurements and mapping of land and ocean properties for climate predictions (e.g., global/regional land cover, soil moisture, surface albedo, ice and snow cover and properties, ocean topography, etc.).
- Development and application of digital terrain models for improving regional weather predictions (e.g., boundary layer parameterizations in Numerical Weather Prediction Models, aerodynamic-roughness length, aggregation- roughness length, etc.).
- Specific problems related to generic tools and techniques for automated
preprocessing, integration, and interpretation of spatial data for
meteorology and climatology applications with the main focus on requirements
identified by users of GIS tools and output products.
- Understanding of the operational requirements, instruments, missions, and ground segment data handling for use in GIS as well as issues of data standards, formats and quality assessments, determined by the meteorological and climatological communities.
Special solicited presentations by professionals in the field of e.g. data infrastructure and spatial information science are planned to provide an overview of 'what is already possible' and 'what is likely to be of interest' for the meteorological and climatological community.
The session also includes presentations from the related field of aviation weather where, similar to GIS applications, extensive use of meteorological and other data sets is made.
