Human industrial activity produces the dispersion of chemical waste into the environment and therefore
pollution. For both human land use and natural terrestrial ecosysems, soil is a vital and non-renewable
resource and an essential environmental component. Phytoremediation includes different technical
processes that lead to the amelioration of contaminated soils by the cultivation of plants. Such procedures
are applied to soils contaminated with different hazardous inorganic substances: such as heavy metals or
inorganic cyanides and organic substances: pesticides, Hydrocarbon pollutants, fuel oil, cresols, PAHs, PCBs,
coal tar, etc. These Phytoremediation processes are in general slow and can therefore be considered
inconvenient. These "in situ" techniques are however, more eco-friendly as well as being cost efficient. It is
not for example necessary to excavate, remove or transfer soils using large machines. Procedures applied to
soils contaminated by heavy metals mainly include phytostabilization, phytoimmobilization and
phytoextraction.
In this symposia all works proceeding from both private and public organizations from any of the five
continents related to the above topics will be considered for oral or poster presentation.
