  Information - BG6.07 Cycles of trace elements and their isotopes in a changing ocean (co-listed in CL, OS & SSP)

Event Information
The cycling of trace elements and their isotopes (TEI) in the ocean is directly linked to ocean circulation and to the major biogeochemical cycles. Some TEIs act as micronutrients and can control marine productivity and ecosystem structure in regions of the ocean. The distribution of other TEIs in seawater and sediments can be controlled by a variety of oceanic processes and provide means of studying these processes in the present ocean and in the past.

Recent advances in clean sampling protocols and in analytical techniques provide unprecedented capabilities for measuring a wide range of TEIs in the ocean. The international program Geotraces is being set up to coordinate studies that will document the large-scale distribution of important TEIs in the world ocean, elucidate their sources, sinks, and recycling, and generate a level of understanding of their biogeochemical cycles sufficient to decipher the information imbedded in their distribution. The session will provide a forum to present biogeochemical, analytical and modelling studies of TEIs and advance the planning of Geotraces - related activities.
