All matter has a characteristic magnetic behaviour. Our challenge is to
understand the geological, environmental, or even biological
significance of the characterized mineral assemblage and magnetic
behaviour. This session welcomes contributions of applied and
fundamental research exposing all or parts of the long process from
mineral identification to geological interpretation which may take us
from the field to the lab to the virtual world of numerical simulation.
This includes, but is not limited to, magnetic and non-magnetic
techniques for mineral identification (low-temperature magnetometry,
Mössbauer spectroscopy, XMCD, electron holography,…), challenges in
recovering the characteristic remanent magnetization (ChRM) and
assessing the origin of the ChRM, efforts in extracting
paleointensities, both relative and absolute, of the ancient geomagnetic
field, difficulties in evaluating the degree and pathway of alteration
of magnetic minerals, and methods for measuring and separating the
mineral and rock fabrics from induced and remanent magnetic anisotropies.
