  Information - IS19 - GMPV26/TS10 Volcano tectonics (co-organized by GMPV & TS)

Event Information
The session on volcano-tectonics deals with any type of deformation (such as that induced by tectonic forces, magma or gravity), at any scale, in subaerial and submarine volcanic areas. In particular, we hope that the contributions to this session will advance our knowledge of the physical processes responsible for, and thus help us make correct interpretations of, volcano deformation during periods of unrest.

The session includes, but is not restricted to, the following topics:

• relationships between volcanism and regional tectonics (in oceanic and continental rifts, arcs, back-arcs and hot spots);
• structural features in volcanic areas;
• relationships between earthquakes and eruptions;
• characteristics and mechanisms of caldera collapse, resurgence and unrest;
• conditions for dyke propagation, emplacement and arrest;
• modes of sector collapse of volcanoes;
• dynamics of formation of magma chambers, laccoliths, and other large intrusions;
• shallow transfer of magma at volcanic edifices and hazard mitigation;
• physical properties of volcanic rocks.

Particularly welcome are contributions based on results from fieldwork, remote-sensing studies, geophysical measurements, and analytical, analogue, and numerical models.

Some of the questions that we hope to address in this session are: (a) What controls the rise and emplacement of magma in the crust? (b) How magma is transferred and erupts at volcanic edifices? (c) How can we improve our knowledge of the infrastructures and mechanical behaviour of active volcanoes?
