Information - VGP29 Elemental and isotopic variations within felsic magmas: do we know the causes?

When groups of spatially and temporally related granitic and felsic volcanic rocks are chemically analysed, the variations can commonly be modelled as products of processes such crystal fractionation. However, what do we conclude if the variations do not seem to be systematic or there is a high component of "noise" in the data? If the variation is generally explicable in terms of mixing, unmixing or fractionation, what if the isotopic constraints disagree with models based on major- and trace-element variations? What do we conclude if fractionation models based on trace-element variations violate constraints from mineralogy, petrography and major-element variations? These are not hypothetical questions. They are real, and faced regularly by those working in granite magma petrogenesis. Assuming that disparate results are not caused by analytical errors or lack of sufficient data, we have some paradoxes to explain. The purpose of this session is to explore examples of these phenomena in "suites" of felsic igneous rocks, and investigate possible resolutions to those apparent paradoxes.
