Fieldtrip "Tideelbe"

The Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) invites the participants of the congress to join a 3 to 4 hours river boat tour through the port area. There will be a lot of harbour business and flood defense wall constructions. But the main message will be presented by some specialists, who work on concepts to optimize the tidal river system as a whole. This includes scientific biological and physical effects as well as economic and ecological aims in a win – win – solution – philosophy:

Climate change touches a tidal river system by much more than just storm events.
Sea level rise includes effects on tides and this leads to an increased "tidal pumping" of sediments, upstream the river. They have to be dredged again and again.
A decrease of fresh water discharge by reduction of rainfall in the catchment area of the river will even support these effects.
A Tidal-Elbe-Concept will be explained on the tour and one of the answers of HPA is the developing of shallow water areas in and around Hamburg to reduce these effects. Some of such potential areas can also be used as inundation polders to cap the highest water level of storm floods.
Some of them will be passed by on the tour.
