Varenna stands on the eastern shore of Lake Como and is approximately 70 km north of Milan and 20 km north of Lecco. Details on local transportation can be found at the web page of Coordinamento Turistico Lago di Como.

How to reach Varenna from Milan:

• By Car: Take the north portion of Milan’s beltway (Tangenziale Nord Milano - A52); near Cinisello take the speedway to Lecco (Strada Statale 36 - SS 36); after Lecco, you can either take the road that follows the lakeshore or stay on speedway SS 36 – in this case, take the exit Bellano and go back approximately 3 km along the road that follows the lakeshore.
• By Train: From Milan main railway station (Milano Centrale) take the train to Sondrio/Tirano – all trains stop at Varenna after about one hour (see here for time table).
• By Taxi: There are several taxi services; in Varenna you can contact Taxi Varenna.
• From Milano Malpensa Airport (see here): Take Malpensa Shuttle bus to Milan Central railway station; then, take the train to Varenna.
• From Milano Linate Airport (see here): Take the STARFLY bus to Milan Central railway station; then, take the train to Varenna.

A minibus transfer service from/to Malpensa and Linate Airports can be organized by the Conference Organization depending on time of arrival/departure and number of passengers (price will depend on the number of passengers – minimum number: 6, for a cost of 33 Euros per person).  Should you be interested in utilizing this service, please, inform the Organizing Committee (plinius9@artov.isac.cnr) (write details of your arrival/departure).

How to reach Varenna from other towns on Lake Como:

• Varenna is connected by train (route Milano – Sondrio/Tirano) with most towns on the eastern shore of Lake Como (see here for time table).
• Varenna is also connected by ferryboat (see here) with several towns on the other shores of Lake Como (especially, with Bellagio, Menaggio and Cadenabbia).
• Finally, there are various taxi boat services operating on the lake – such as Service Boat Menaggio, Boat Service and Taxi Boat.

The Conference Organization is presently evaluating the possibility of organizing a free-of-charge boat transfer service during the Conference days (Monday – Wednesday), so as to bring participants to Varenna from Menaggio (departure @ 7:40 a.m.), Cadenabbia (departure @ 8:05 a.m.) and Bellagio (departure @ 8:25 a.m.) and take them back in the evenings after the Buffet/Conference Dinners. Should you be interested in utilizing this service, please, inform the Organizing Committee (plinius9@artov.isac.cnr) (write name and location of your Hotel).
