Objectives of the Conference

The objectives of the conference are to provide an interdisciplinary forum for the discussion of the present state of knowledge on Mediterranean storms and extreme events, considering their meteorological, hydrological and geological aspects and their effects on mountain and hill slopes, river networks and coastal areas. Topics will include analysis of observations, modeling and future forecasting of heat and cool waves, wind storms, floods, flash floods, slow and fast moving landslides, coastal erosion and sedimentation. Also, the theoretical and conceptual understanding of Mediterranean storms will be included.

The conference will focus on:

  • Achieving a deeper understanding of the physical processes involved in the formation, onset and development of short- and long-term meteorological events in the Mediterranean area,
  • Application of innovative remote sensing technologies to the study and management of extreme events,
  • Evaluation of the quality, reliability, and usefulness of numerical modeling for the prediction of prolonged or intense rainfall events and geo-hydrological effects associated with storms, and for the development of anticipated responses,
  • The issue of “uncertainty” in observations (e.g. precipitation measurement), in modeling meteorological, hydrological and geological process, and its propagation in applications,
  • Extreme events, past, present and future in an era of global warming.

The conference will include five main topics:

  • Topic 1: Extreme events and Mediterranean storms under global warming.
  • Topic 2: Monitoring and diagnosis of Mediterranean Storms.
  • Topic 3: Physical processes in the context of global circulations and tele-connections.
  • Topic 4: Hydrology and hydrometeorology of high Intense storms.
  • Topic 5: Meteorological, hydrological and geological risks, disaster management and mitigation strategies
